Women’s desire for a beautiful, firm, and well-toned figure is one of the main factors driving the development of the beauty and cosmetology industry. Various cosmetic and body-contouring methods are available to combat excess weight, cellulite, and other body imperfections.

However, as results and reviews have shown, the available procedures were unable to provide sufficiently effective results in the fight against excess weight and were applicable only as supplementary therapeutic and/or maintenance procedures in cases of very slight excess weight.

For a long time, the only effective method to get rid of the bothersome layer of fat was surgical liposuction. Today, 3D liposuction is a highly sought-after cosmetic procedure not only among women but also among men.

However, as the field of cosmetology has evolved, a solution has been found for cases where surgical procedures, for various reasons, are not the preferred method. Cavitation, or ultrasound liposuction, is a relatively innovative method that allows you to quickly and effectively get rid of excess weight and cellulite with lasting results without surgical intervention.

What is ultrasound liposuction, or cavitation? What are the benefits of this method, and in which cases does it help? – Find out more about all of this in this article!

What is cavitation?

Ultrasonic cavitation is an effective, safe, and non-invasive method for reducing body fat. The word cavitation comes from Greek and literally means emptiness.

The cavitation device emits low-frequency ultrasound waves through special applicators, which act on the subcutaneous fat layer. During the process, as the ultrasound waves interact with the fluid inside fat cells, a cavitation effect is triggered.

Simply put, micro-voids appear in the fluid—tiny bubbles form that change size during the procedure. Some of these bubbles burst, thereby damaging the fat cell membrane and eventually destroying the fat cells. Initially, the fat cells that are larger and more filled with fluid burst first, as they receive the greatest impact during the ultrasound treatment.

As the fat cells are destroyed, the lipolysis process is triggered—the breakdown and elimination of fat from the body. As a result of fat cell breakdown, the triglycerides released from the fat cells—which are a component of fat cells—enter the intercellular space and are partially eliminated from the body via the circulatory and lymphatic systems.

Ultrasonic liposuction is an effective method in the following cases:

  • Localized fat deposits—liposuction is possible on the legs, buttocks, and abdomen, as well as on the arms and chin—cavitation can be performed on almost any part of the body where fat deposits are found;
  • After pregnancy or rapid weight changes (the procedure must not be performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding);
  • To correct minor defects from invasive or surgical liposuction, or prior to surgery;
  • To eliminate cellulite at all stages

Is ultrasound liposuction safe?

Yes, it is a non-invasive and painless method that leaves no permanent marks or bruises on the treated area of the body.

However, the cavitation procedure is a fairly serious method, so it is very important that it be performed according to established protocols and in compliance with all requirements. It is also important that the procedure be performed by a knowledgeable specialist using certified equipment and that all post-procedure instructions be followed.

Ultrasonic liposuction affects only the subcutaneous layer; there is no effect on deeper tissue layers, organs, or the skeletal system. For example, cavitation on the abdomen does not affect reproductive or other organs or their function.

In cases where any of the following contraindications are present, the procedure will not be performed:

  • chronic kidney or liver disease,
  • diabetes,
  • chronic infectious diseases,
  • a pacemaker or metal implants in the body,
  • skin diseases or inflammation in the treatment area,
  • blood clotting disorders,
  • oncological diseases,
  • varicose veins, thrombophlebitis,
  • serious metabolic disorders,
  • vascular diseases,
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding,
  • severe obesity or, conversely, minimal or no excess weight

How is the procedure performed, and what happens afterward?

The ultrasound liposuction procedure takes no longer than 30–50 minutes, and to achieve the full effect, it is recommended to undergo approximately 4–10 sessions, depending on the size of the problem area.

A break of approximately 7–10 days is required between procedures; during this time, it is highly recommended to begin lymphatic drainage massages and treatments 2 days after the procedure to ensure that the broken-down fat cell residues are successfully eliminated from the body.

Feedback after the cavitation procedure is positive; however, during the process, clients hear a crackling or popping sensation in the body. This is audible only to the client herself, and this side effect occurs when the ultrasound frequency interacts with the fluid within the cells.

The effect is noticeable after just one session, but by completing the course, it is possible to reduce the circumference by 3–4 cm and successfully eliminate cellulite.

You should drink a couple of glasses of water before the procedure, but after the procedure, and throughout the entire course, you must drink at least 2.5 liters of water per day so that the broken-down fat is flushed out of the body rather than thickening and accumulating on the walls of the lymphatic vessels. It is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid fatty, spicy foods, and alcohol in your diet.

Benefits of Ultrasound Liposuction

  • A painless, non-invasive method that leaves no marks on the treated area, so you can safely go swimming, sunbathe, etc., after the procedure.
  • Cavitation is much more affordable than surgical liposuction. The price of cavitation for a single procedure is approximately 50 euros.
  • The procedure can also be combined with other body contouring methods for an enhanced effect.
  • The effect is noticeable after the very first session, and it is long-lasting—the broken-down fat cells do not regenerate.
