Vitamin D is one of the most important micronutrients in our body. If the body suffers from a prolonged vitamin D deficiency, immune system function deteriorates, leading to fatigue, weakness, and depression; nonspecific symptoms such as muscle weakness and muscle pain may also appear. Vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of viral infections; furthermore, extensive studies have also demonstrated the impact of vitamin D deficiency on the development of oncological, autoimmune, and other chronic diseases, as well as on the severity of these conditions.

A study conducted in the United Kingdom in 2017 demonstrated that people with sufficient vitamin D levels are less likely to contract acute respiratory viral infections, including the flu, and that taking sufficient doses of vitamin D reduces the risk of infection by up to 50%.

However, approximately 85% of residents in Nordic countries have insufficient vitamin D levels. Studies conducted in Latvia indicate that only one-fifth of Latvia’s population has sufficient vitamin D levels. The reason for this is our geographical location—there are significantly fewer sunny days per year at our latitude than in southern countries, yet it is UV radiation that enables the body’s natural synthesis of vitamin D.
