Removable dentures are a common and effective solution for replacing missing teeth, allowing patients to restore not only the aesthetics of the smile, but also speech, chewing and other natural dental functions. However, to ensure the longevity of the dentures, optimal function and oral health, they require careful and proper daily care.

How to take proper care of removable dentures so that they last for years and provide daily comfort is explained by specialist Dana Zālīte at the Health and Beauty Centre Adoria.

Daily Care for Removable Dentures

Regular and correct care of removable dentures is critically important to prevent a number of potential dental and oral problems, including:

  • Formation of plaque and tartar: just like natural teeth, bacteria, food debris and other micro‑organisms accumulate on the surface of dentures, forming plaque and, over time, tartar;
  • Oral infections and inflammation: inadequate denture hygiene can trigger gum inflammation (gingivitis) or even more serious periodontal diseases, affecting both oral and general health;
  • Bad breath (halitosis): bacterial growth on dentures is a frequent cause of unpleasant breath;
  • Damage to the denture material: the use of inappropriate cleaning agents can damage the denture material, reducing its lifespan and aesthetic appearance, and increasing the risk of trauma to the oral mucosa.

Daily Care Steps

  1. Cleaning twice a day: dentures should be cleaned at least twice a day – in the morning before insertion and in the evening before going to bed.
  2. Special brushes and cleaning agents: cleaning should be carried out with a soft brush specifically designed for removable dentures and a gentle, non‑abrasive cleaning agent. Using regular toothpaste for denture cleaning is not always ideal, because it may contain abrasive particles that can scratch the denture surface, creating microscopic defects where bacteria can accumulate. It is preferable to choose cleaning agents available at dental offices or pharmacies that are suitable for different denture materials.
  3. Rinsing after meals: whenever possible, dentures should be removed after each meal and carefully rinsed with lukewarm water, both the oral cavity and the dentures. This helps remove food debris and reduces plaque formation.
  4. Removing denture adhesive: if denture adhesive is used to secure the dentures, it should be carefully removed from both the denture and the gum mucosa after each use, to prevent irritation and reduce the risk of infection.
  5. Regular soaking in disinfecting solutions: in addition to daily cleaning, dentures should be regularly soaked, for example once a week or according to the dentist’s recommendations, in special denture‑cleaning and disinfecting solutions. These solutions effectively kill bacteria and fungi that can cause oral infections and bad breath.

Proper Denture Storage and Common Mistakes

Removable dentures should be stored correctly when not in use. At night, dentures should preferably be removed to allow the gums to rest and to prevent excessive pressure on the jawbone. Dentures must never be left dry, because this can cause deformation and, over time, make them fragile. They should be stored in a special denture‑storage container filled with clean, cool water or a denture‑storage solution.

Special denture‑cleaning and storage solutions are designed to ensure effective disinfection and deep cleaning. They help not only to destroy bacteria and fungi that can cause oral infections and bad breath, but also to prevent the formation of biofilm on the denture surface.

Before placing the dentures back in the mouth, they must be rinsed thoroughly under running, lukewarm water to remove any residues of cleaning solution that could irritate the oral mucosa. To ensure maximum effectiveness, the instructions for use of the denture‑cleaning solution must be carefully followed and the solution changed regularly.

The most common mistakes are cleaning dentures with hot water, which can cause irreversible deformation of the denture material, and using abrasive cleaning agents, including regular toothpaste, which can scratch the denture surface. To avoid accidental damage to the dentures, it is recommended to hold them over a soft surface or above a sink filled with water when cleaning.

Choosing Denture Cleaning Agents and Other Tips

Various denture‑cleaning agents are available on the market – tablets, solutions, foams and gels – and their choice depends on personal preferences and the denture material. Before using any new product, it is advisable to consult a dentist or hygienist. Some agents are intended for daily use, while others are meant for more intensive cleaning once a week or once a month.

Patients who are just starting to use removable dentures should expect an adaptation period. Initially, chewing and speech can be somewhat difficult, and getting used to the oral care and denture‑care routine takes time, but in most cases discomfort and difficulties are reduced within a few months.

However, for patients for whom the adaptation process is prolonged and causes pronounced discomfort, removable dentures can serve as a temporary solution until the patient has the opportunity to opt for fixed restorations. Today a range of solutions is available, from dental crowns and bridges to the placement of dental implants.
