Dental and oral problems can cause not only discomfort and aesthetic inconveniences, but also affect overall health and quality of daily life. One of the most common and unpleasant dental problems is pulpitis or tooth root canal inflammation. It is important to start pulpitis treatment as soon as possible to eliminate unpleasant symptoms and save the damaged tooth from extraction.

Although timely treatment nowadays provides effective results, the best approach to preventing dental problems is prevention. How to reduce tooth root canal infection risk and maintain healthy teeth, tells dentist at the Health and Beauty Center Adoria Aleksandra Feoktistova

Tooth Root Canal Inflammation: Causes and Symptoms

Pulpitis is inflammation of the tooth pulp or the soft tissues of the tooth – nerves and blood vessels – whose most common causes are untreated caries in time. As caries progresses, a significant tooth damage or so-called cavity forms, allowing bacteria to enter the pulp chamber, resulting in soft tissue inflammation. Other causes of pulpitis can be tooth trauma, such as fracture or crack, damaged tooth fillings, as well as repeated dental procedures and periodontal diseases.

The typical symptoms of tooth root canal infection are:

  • severe, pulsating pain in the tooth, which may intensify at night and with thermal (heat, cold) and/or chemical (sweet, sour) irritants. Pain may radiate to a wider facial area as well;
  • increased tooth sensitivity to thermal, chemical and mechanical irritants, such as brushing teeth, touching the tooth with a spoon, etc.;
  • gum swelling and redness;
  • as a result of inflammation and pulp necrosis (pulp tissue death), a rapid change in tooth color can be observed – the tooth becomes darker, grayer;
  • in more severe cases, body temperature may rise.

If any of the symptoms is observed, it is important to go to an endodontist as soon as possible and start root canal treatment. If pulpitis is not treated in time, tooth root abscess develops and more severe complications, when in most cases the only solution is tooth extraction.

Tips for Preventing Tooth Root Canal Inflammation Risk

  1. Thorough oral hygiene: regular tooth brushing twice a day, using interdental cleaning agents and mouthwashes helps prevent plaque formation and reduces caries risk. When brushing teeth, it is important to thoroughly clean not only all tooth surfaces, but also the tongue and gums.
  2. Proper tooth care technique: for tooth care, choose a toothbrush with soft bristles, avoiding strong, scrubbing motions that in the long term can traumatize not only the gums, increasing the risk of periodontal disease, but also damage tooth enamel. Gum microtraumas and enamel micro-cracks are a favorable environment for bacterial spread, which promotes caries and eventually pulpitis risk.
  3. Using fluoride-containing preparations: fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and protects against both caries and tooth demineralization, so it is advisable to use fluoride-containing oral care products daily. For additional tooth protection, deep tooth fluoridation can be performed at the Health and Beauty Center Adoria dentistry.
  4. Preventive visits to the dentist: by visiting the dentist and dental hygienist twice a year for preventive dental check-up and professional dental hygiene, it is possible to maximally reduce caries risk, detect and treat caries damage in time, thereby preventing tooth root canal inflammation risk and other dental and oral soft tissue problems.
  5. Healthy diet: to promote dental health, it is recommended to follow a balanced diet and include foods containing calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D and other nutrients essential for dental and overall health in the daily menu. It is also important to limit the consumption of sugary and acidic products, as they promote caries formation and tooth enamel erosion. In addition to a complete diet, the use of dietary supplements in a course can be considered to strengthen dental health, after consulting a doctor or pharmacist first.
  6. Preventing tooth trauma: when engaging in activities that can cause tooth trauma, such as contact sports, it is advisable to use mouthguards. In case of tooth trauma or fracture, it is important to see a dentist as soon as possible to assess the tooth condition and prevent tooth root canal inflammation risk.
  7. Dental crowns and dental implants: if tooth damage is significant and the only solution is tooth extraction, it is advisable not to delay and choose the most suitable tooth prosthetics solution for your possibilities and wishes. This is important not only to restore tooth function and aesthetics, but also to prevent further problems, including pulpitis risk. Quality dental implants are the most modern and long-lasting tooth prosthetics method at the moment, providing the most natural and comfortable result. Moreover, artificial dental structures, such as dental crowns or bridge fixed on an implant, are practically indistinguishable from natural teeth.
