Root canal treatment is associated with discomfort and fears for many. However, thanks to modern dental technologies, the procedure has become much more comfortable, effective and faster.

To dispel unfounded fears and uncertainties, it is important to understand the course of this procedure and its benefits. Therefore, in this article, Health and Beauty Center Adoria dentistry in Riga dentist Aleksandra Feoktistova provides a detailed insight into the root canal treatment process!

What is Pulpitis or Tooth Soft Tissue Inflammation?

Root canal treatment or endodontics is a dental procedure performed in cases where tooth caries has led to inflammation of the tooth's soft tissues or pulpitis. Pulp inflammation can develop under the influence of various factors – most often as a result of untreated caries in time. However, tooth enamel micro-cracks, tooth trauma, damaged fillings, periodontitis create a favorable environment for infection to spread to the tooth's soft tissues.

The purpose of the procedure is to remove infected pulp tissues, disinfect the root canals and fill them with a special, biocompatible material to prevent further infection spread. It is important to remember that endodontics is often the last step that allows avoiding tooth loss.

The simplest way to prevent pulpitis risk preventively is to visit the dentist prophylactically. However, sudden tooth pain is a sign that the dentist needs to be visited immediately. Timely treatment will help save the tooth and prevent the risk of serious complications, including:

  • periodontal disease: infection can spread from the pulp to surrounding tissues, increasing the risk of gingivitis and periodontitis;
  • abscess: pus formation that forms in the tissues at the tooth root end, when most often the only solution is tooth extraction;
  • sepsis: in very rare cases, infection can spread to other organs via the bloodstream, causing sepsis, which is a life-threatening condition.

Root Canal Treatment: Step by Step

Root canal treatment usually takes place over 2 visits. In the first visit, the root canals are cleaned, disinfected and filled with special medications. If the patient has no complaints, the next visit is planned in about 10 days, when the root canals are filled with permanent filling and tooth reconstruction is performed.

Diagnosis and Anesthesia

  • Initially, a visual tooth examination and listening to the patient's complaints are performed.
  • To accurately assess the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissues and infection spread, digital X-ray examinations are also performed.
  • Before starting the procedure, local anesthesia is administered to the patient to prevent any discomfort during the procedure.

Tooth Isolation and Caries Removal

  • The infected tooth is isolated from saliva to ensure a sterile procedure.
  • Caries or damaged tooth tissue removal is performed, providing access to the root canals.
  • To ensure maximally precise and as little invasive procedure as possible, endodontics can be performed under microscope control at the Health and Beauty Center Adoria dentistry.
  • The latest generation microscope is equipped with an integrated HD camera that allows documenting the treatment process for further analysis of the treatment progress.

Root Canal Cleaning, Disinfection, Filling

  • Using special instruments, mechanical treatment of inflamed tissues is performed.
  • After mechanical treatment, chemical treatment or disinfection of the root canals is performed.
  • During the first procedure, after canal cleaning and disinfection, temporary medications are placed in the root canals to maximally prevent the risk of recurrent infection.
  • During the second procedure, temporary medications are removed, the root canals are disinfected again, and filled with permanent filling.

Tooth Restoration

  • At the end of the first visit, the patient is given a quality temporary filling.
  • During the second procedure, depending on the extent of tooth loss, tooth reconstruction with a permanent filling is performed to restore the tooth's shape, function and aesthetics.
  • If the tooth damage is extensive, other solutions may be needed – dental surgery, dental implant placement, onlays/inlays, dental crown or other prosthetic solutions installation.

It is important to remember that children are not protected from pulpitis risk either, and it is especially important to monitor children's teeth during the period of permanent teeth growth. A wide range of pediatric dentistry services are available at the Health and Beauty Center Adoria.

For prophylactic dental health maintenance, no less than once every six months, children from 2–3 years old are recommended to visit the dental hygienist to accustom the child to care for their dental health, as well as reduce fears of dentist visits.
