Myths and Facts About PRP and PRF Injections

Regenerative medicine and natural beauty treatments are experiencing a surge in popularity; however, as their popularity grows, misinformation often spreads online. False myths about PRP and PRF injections often deter patients from effective therapies that could significantly improve skin condition or stop hair loss.
To dispel doubts and help you make an informed decision, Jevgenija Vladimirova, a dermatologist at the Adoria Health and Beauty Center, explains the most common misconceptions and reveals the real facts about PRP and PRF injections.
Myth #1: “It’s the same as filler injections or Botox therapy”
One of the most common misconceptions is the belief that all cosmetic injections work on the same principle. The truth is that their mechanisms of action, applications, and results are completely different. Today, aesthetic medicine offers a variety of solutions, and it is important to understand the differences between procedures.
For example, fillers work mechanically—they fill in wrinkles and restore lost volume to the facial contours. Botulinum toxin injections, which are so popular today, block muscle activity, reducing the intensity of facial expressions and preventing the formation of dynamic wrinkles. Biorevitalization, on the other hand, serves a completely different purpose—it focuses on improving skin quality by providing deep hydration and restoring the skin’s moisture balance with the help of hyaluronic acid.
In contrast to these methods, the goal of PRP and PRF therapies is entirely different. The most common myths about PRP and PRF injections often overlook the core essence of these procedures—deep tissue regeneration and cellular renewal. PRP and PRF injections do not mask the problem but rather encourage the skin to “work” on its own. By introducing the patient’s own blood preparation into the tissues, collagen synthesis and the formation of new cells are stimulated, which in the long term improves the skin’s structure rather than merely visually smoothing its texture.
Given this wide range of beauty and cosmetic procedures, the question often arises: what do people choose most often? Find out about last year’s most in-demand methods and trends in beauty care in the article “The Most Popular Beauty Procedures in Latvia in 2025”.
Myth #2: “The procedure is dangerous and can cause an allergic reaction”

Many patients fear that chemical substances will be injected into their bodies, causing an unpredictable reaction. The facts about PRP and PRF injections show the opposite—it is one of the safest procedures in aesthetic medicine.
Since the preparation is made from the patient’s own blood (autologous material), the risk of allergic reactions or rejection is practically nonexistent. Unlike synthetic preparations, plasma is fully biocompatible. Furthermore, compared to other methods, this procedure has very few contraindications.
Since no synthetic products are used, restrictions apply mainly only to patients with specific blood disorders or acute infections at the time of the procedure. The only minor risk is associated with the injections themselves (bruising or temporary redness), but provided sterility and proper technique are maintained, the procedure is completely safe.
Myth 3: “PPR and PRF injections are very painful and require a long recovery period”
When people imagine injections into the scalp or face, many picture frightening scenes. The reality of PRP and PRF injections is much less intimidating. Although everyone’s pain threshold is different, the procedure is performed using extremely fine micro-needles (using the mesotherapy technique).
An anesthetic cream is applied to the facial area beforehand, which minimizes any discomfort. As for the scalp, the injections feel like small, quick mosquito bites. The recovery period is also minimal—you can return to your daily routine almost immediately, provided you follow a few of the doctor’s instructions regarding hygiene and physical activity.
Myth 4: “The results should be visible immediately after leaving the clinic”

We live in an age where we want everything immediately, but we can’t cheat physiology. It is precisely regarding how quickly the effects appear that the myths and truths about PRP and PRF injections most often clash. Since these injections stimulate natural regenerative processes in the tissues, the results develop gradually.
The first positive changes—a healthier skin tone or reduced hair loss—are usually noticeable within a couple of weeks. However, the maximum therapeutic result (firmer skin, new hair growth) becomes visible after 3–4 months, once the full cell regeneration cycle is complete. This is a long-term investment, not a short-term solution with a quick but fleeting effect.
Myth #5: “The procedure is extremely expensive and available only to celebrities”
There is a belief that biotechnology of this caliber is a luxury service that the “average person” cannot afford. While it is not the cheapest procedure, it has certainly become more financially accessible.
When you look at the service costs in the price list section of our website, you’ll see that investing in your beauty and health is comparable to a high-quality cosmetic treatment, but with much deeper results. Furthermore, given the longevity of the results, this method often proves to be more cost-effective in the long run than the regular purchase of superficial products with limited effectiveness.
Myth 6: “The procedure is intended only for facial skin rejuvenation”

Although PRP and PRF therapy are primarily associated with facial aesthetics and anti-aging procedures, the belief that it is only suitable for reducing wrinkles is mistaken. In fact, this method is widely and extremely effectively used in trichology—to combat hair loss and improve scalp health.
When growth factors are injected into the scalp, they can “awaken” dormant follicles and improve microcirculation, which is critically important in cases of androgenetic alopecia or postpartum hair loss. The therapy not only stops hair loss but also makes hair thicker and more vibrant. Therefore, this is a universal method that works equally well for both facial beauty and restoring a full head of hair.
